Cape Town’s Integrated Rapid Transit System takes shape

The City of Cape Town announced deadlines for the implementation of phase one of the Integrated Rapid Transit System (IRTS) at a meeting of the Cape Town Partnership’s Central City Partners Forum this week.

The West Coast trunk route between Bayside Shopping Centre and the CBD/ Waterfront will be up and running by February 2011.

An Inner City feeder system, supporting the West Coast and Airport trunk routes, will be in place by October 2011.

An interim Inner City system will be launched at the end of September 2010.

Planning for phase two of the IRTS in the metro south east (e.g. Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain) is underway.

The IRTS will be implemented in four phases over 20 years (source: City of Cape Town)

    October 2011. Great timing for COP 17. :)

    Looking forward to hearing more with regards to the COP 17 Delegates Village. I hope it accelerates discussions around a cruise ship terminal.
