Cape Town Fan Walk lives on

It wasn’t as big as the World Cup Fan Walk. Or as glamorous. But last night’s PSL double header at the Cape Town Stadium showed that the Cape Town Fan Walk is here to stay.

Of the 46 000 people that attended the match at the stadium, only 6 000 used the shuttle buses, and approximately 1 000 the minibus taxies. This means that nearly 40 000 fans, supported by people just walking for the experience, used the Fan Walk.

The Fan Walk is turning out to be much more than a mobility corridor to get people to an event at the stadium. It is a new way of using public space, of discovering the central city, of promoting public transport. It is a new way for Capetonians from disparate communities to come together. It is a way for families to enjoy safe public space, at night. It is a way for traders and retailers to make money. And for local entertainers to make a living.

A range of City Departments helped to make the Fan Walk a great success, with the exception of poor service from the Traffic Department. This is one aspect that needs to be improved before the next big game involving Bafana Bafana in October.

I did the Fan Walk on Friday, did the “park ‘n ride”, caught the train – what an amazing experience.
