If you ever needed an excuse to walk on the Sea Point Promenade, now’s the time to go and see Walking the Road, an inspiring public art project by Marieke Prinsloo. I’m not going to tell you what the story is about – you must experience it yourself.
Once you’ve walked the walk, read more about the project at Walking the Road.
All I can say is that public art is coming of age in Cape Town with this magnificent project. It compliments other new public art works on St Andrew’s Square, Artscape Piazza and the IRT Stations. Well done to Councillor JP Smith and the City of Cape Town for facilitating Walking the Road to be displayed in such a prominent yet totally appropriate space.
The artworks are on display until June 2011. Here’s hoping that by then, the public won’t allow them to be taken down…

This is so stunning! I heard all about the love of one sister for another and she made these models of her sister and her love of swimming….I need to go there and take my own pics…lovely
Yes it is great to see more much-needed public art appearing in Cape Town, however I am curious to know if this project was commissioned and what curatorial process took place? Also what future plans are there in the city for further public art installations?
At the risk of nitpicking, I do however feel that the statues have been inappropriately situated. As a regular runner and walker on the promenade, I feel the statues act as a blockage to the pedestrian flow – especially during already congested peak use times. Perhaps this could be solved if moved closer to the grass…
Long over-stayed it’s welcome is this ‘temporary exhibition’
to whom do we appeal for it’s removal ?
