After several months of negotiations, the City of Cape Town has temporarily relaxed some of the provisions of the outdoor advertising bylaw to allow the Dutch Government to place a mural on the wall of the Dutch Consulate (corner Wale and Buitengracht) in time for the 2010 World Cup.
The first panels in the process of going up this morning. The mural is constructed out of a very thin vinyl which is 'ironed on' to the wall using a heat process

What the mural would have had to look like if the full provisions of the outdoor advertising bylaw had been applied
Murals like this will help to add colour to Cape Town during the World Cup. I have no doubt that many Dutch fans will want to pose in front of the mural for a picture when they are in Cape Town to see the Netherlands play Cameroon on June 24. These pictures will then circulate virally through Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and other social media, helping to keep Cape Town on the map.
