Yesterday, I wrote about the huge public space opportunities that will present themselves once the new CT Station Square in the Central City is unveiled (Cape Town Station Square – Unburied Treasure). In today’s Cape Times, I see that my colleague Mokena Makeka, the Cape Town architect behind the redesign of the station, has recently been given a Johnnie Walker Celebrating Strides design award, for his work on the station.

Vision for CT Station urban regeneration project, phase two, showing the possible impact east of the CBD if the train lines are sunk underground and new development takes place on top
Mokena says that he will be using the prize money to help establish an Academy for Leadership and Creative Excellence: “My full vision is to create a network of academics across Africa in which mediocrity is rejected, excellence is rewarded and creativity is rightfully located as a critical tool for the leaders of tomorrow”.
Well done Mokena – you fully deserve the award.
(Mokena, when he’s not designing stations, writes a regular column with Rory Williams in the Cape Times entitled Men About Town. Check it out.)

Any chance you could find diagrams of the proposed sinking of the railway lines concept? In an article Mokena was quoted as saying that there are 23 shipwrecks from the station up until Woodstock beneath the rail lines. A map of this would be great!
Some of the proposals are in the public domain and are available; much of the detail is still before the Prasa Board for a decision. Don’t know about the shipwrecks, but I’m sure Mokena could make them available
Map of shipwrecks is available. You could contact the relevant archaeologist for the CTS 2010 Project, Mary Patrick from Cape Archaeological Surveys to access the GIS map. Hope that helps!..
Thanks Quahnita – will do
